what would you tell the president of your country if you had them in front of you?

Throughout my artistic journey, I have always tried to convey my personal experiences with the hopes that my audience could relate to them. I wished for an art world in which the personal could be politically understood and welcomed at all times. This is not always possible. After a lot of frustration, I realized my needs had changed. Today’s political climate is nothing less than unpredictable, and unfair; nothing less than violent. With so much change happening in the world, I felt the need to give the uncontained fear and anger around me a place to exist.   

This series of screenprints is based on responses to a simple question; What would you tell the president of your country if you had them in front of you? I started asking this question to the people around me. Often met with anger, I decided to collect answers more broadly. After obtaining more than a hundred anonymous responses from people on social media, through online forms, and in-person polling, I chose the ones you see today.   

Printmaking, like words shouted, has the ability to connect with people through repetition and accessibility. Screenprinting was beneficial to the intentions of this piece because of its quick, painterly, and impactful nature. Mimicking people’s need to express their concerns to their nation leaders, abstraction and bold words come together, like a scream one should not shy away from.  

I invite you to imagine these words being yelled at your president by someone you love, by yourself, or by a stranger on the street. My hope is that these words live beyond my practice, and that they linger somewhere near you; your phone, your wall, your mind.

A lo largo de mi trayectoria artística, siempre intenté transmitir mis experiencias personales para que mi público pudiera identificarse con ellas. Soñaba con un mundo artístico en el que lo personal pudiera entenderse políticamente y ser bienvenido en todo momento, lo cual no siempre es posible. Después de mucha frustración, me di cuenta de que mis necesidades habían cambiado. Actualmente, el clima político es tan impredecible, injusto y violento; sentí la necesidad de crear un lugar donde el miedo y la ira incontenibles que nos habitan pudieran existir libremente.  

Esta serie de serigrafías se basa en las respuestas a una pregunta: ¿qué le dirías al presidente de tu país si lo tuvieras delante tuyo? Empecé a preguntar esto a personas de mi entorno y a menudo me encontré con respuestas llenas de ira, así que decidí expandir mi búsqueda. Tras obtener más de un centenar de respuestas anónimas de personas en redes sociales, a través de formularios en línea y encuestas presenciales, elegí las que ven hoy aquí.  

El grabado, como las palabras que se gritan, puede conectar con las personas a través de la repetición y la accesibilidad. La serigrafía fue beneficiosa para las intenciones de esta obra debido a su naturaleza rápida, pictórica e impactante. Imitando la necesidad de las personas de expresar sus preocupaciones a los líderes de su nación, la abstracción y las palabras audaces se unen, como un grito del que no hay que escaparse. 

Les invito a imaginar estas palabras gritadas a su presidente por alguien a quien aman, por ustedes mismos o por un desconocido en la calle. Espero que estas palabras vivan más allá de mi práctica y que vivan en algún lugar cerca de ustedes: en su teléfono, en su pared, en su mente.
